Explore Continuing Education

Leading the education efforts to teach coaches safety, fun, and marksmanship a never-ending task. New methods, process, products, and technology continue to evolve and the ability to keep up with most of it is challenging.

  1. Keep up to date records of your coaches and their credentials.
  2. Make sure your coaching and education preferences are consistent with your team’s objectives for operations and performance expectations.
  3. Consider offering your coaches continuing education each year they are helping your team.
  4. Continuing education can come in many different forms, here are a few we suggest to make sure you have a well-rounded staff:
    • Technical Skills
      • Stance
      • Balance
      • Form
      • Line of sight
      • Hard and soft focus
      • Gun mount
      • Vision
      • Lead
      • Gun fit
      • Dominant Eye
    •  Safety
      • Understanding safety.
      • Demonstrating safety.
      • Teaching safety.
      • Safety is a number one concern at all times and coaches should be offered refresher courses from time to time.
      • Keep up with what’s “new” with safety procedures as it pertains to the league and your home range.
      • Encourage your coaches to attend various instructor courses on safety, meet with your staff and make adjustments as needed to your team safety plan.
    • Mental skills
      • Not all coaches are great teachers, offer your coaches courses that may make them better teachers of the sport.
      • Third year coaches need to learn the skills to teach the mental side of shooting sports, seek out courses that focus on the soft skills.
      • Encourage your coaches to attend courses that are specific to teaching youth about shooting sports.
      • Coaches should attend courses that teach skills for working with both boys and girls.
      • Teaching youth can be a challenge so it is important that you and the other coaches are prepared to meet the needs of the athletes, continuing education is a must if you plan on competing at the highest levels.
  1. Consider the cost and budget to pay for your coaches continuing education.
  2. Make continuing education fun by carpooling, eating lunch together, and quizzing each other on the material.
