Leading the education efforts to teach coaches safety, fun, and marksmanship a never-ending task. New methods, process, products, and technology continue to evolve and the ability to keep up with most of it is challenging.
- Keep up to date records of your coaches and their credentials.
- Make sure your coaching and education preferences are consistent with your team’s objectives for operations and performance expectations.
- Consider offering your coaches continuing education each year they are helping your team.
- Continuing education can come in many different forms, here are a few we suggest to make sure you have a well-rounded staff:

- Safety
- Understanding safety.
- Demonstrating safety.
- Teaching safety.
- Safety is a number one concern at all times and coaches should be offered refresher courses from time to time.
- Keep up with what’s “new” with safety procedures as it pertains to the league and your home range.
- Encourage your coaches to attend various instructor courses on safety, meet with your staff and make adjustments as needed to your team safety plan.
- Mental skills
- Not all coaches are great teachers, offer your coaches courses that may make them better teachers of the sport.
- Third year coaches need to learn the skills to teach the mental side of shooting sports, seek out courses that focus on the soft skills.
- Encourage your coaches to attend courses that are specific to teaching youth about shooting sports.
- Coaches should attend courses that teach skills for working with both boys and girls.
- Teaching youth can be a challenge so it is important that you and the other coaches are prepared to meet the needs of the athletes, continuing education is a must if you plan on competing at the highest levels.
